Buy seedlings, seed mixes and rain barrels now for April delivery from Scott SWCD

The Scott Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) in Jordan annually offers thousands of transplant and seedling trees for purchase by county landowners. There is still time to order seedlings. This young stock is inexpensive and is of the finest stock from wholesale nurseries. This year Scott SWCD, which serves all Scott County residents, has approximately 30,000 seedlings available for sale -- 35 varieties of evergreens, large and medium deciduous trees and shrubs. All trees are sold in bundles of 25. Rain barrels, native seed mixes and tree supplies are also being sold.

The tree program was started to promote conservation and help residents create a more beautiful, healthy and ecologically balanced environment. Scott SWCD’s tree program is considered by many to be a true community service. Many of the county’s farmstead and field windbreaks, wildlife habitat plantings and reforestation efforts have been started as a result of this program. In more recent years, housing developments and community beautification projects have been enhanced with the tree and shrub program. Pine, spruce, fir and cedar, along with lilac, maples, walnut, birch, willow and others are among the choices.

The Scott SWCD encourages all residents to utilize the tree program and purchase stock to start or add to their own beautification plans. Whether you own a city lot and want to plant a privacy hedge line, wish to replace ash or elm trees with a different species or own a couple of acres and want to establish a windbreak, these trees will meet all needs. Plus it’s a great spring-time activity to do as a family. Technical advice on tree plantings for windbreaks and shelterbelts as well as wildlife benefits is also available upon request from the Scott SWCD staff.

 About the program:

  • The program began this fall. The young seedlings are sold on a first-come, first-served basis, but all varieties are still available.
  • Available prices and varieties are indicated on the order form, which is posted on the Scott SWCD website www.scottswcd.org. Other tree materials, variety descriptions and photos are also on the website. Payment must accompany every order (check or cash).
  • All trees are bare-root seedlings or transplants varying in size from 10 inches to 3 feet tall.
  • Purchased trees/shrubs will be available for pick-up the last weekend in April 2012 at the Scott County Fairgrounds in Jordan. Customers who place orders will receive a letter about two weeks before delivery with the specific pick-up information.

Residents may contact Diane Hrabe at the Scott SWCD office, (952) 492-5416, or visit www.scottswcd.org for an order form or additional information. If you are looking for a gift idea for a friend or family member who loves the outdoors, gift certificates are also available.
