Environmental Education

Scott County Environmental Health responds to environmental and public health issues through innovative and creative solutions. Our Public Education Team provides information, resources, and services that address the needs and wishes of our citizens and communities.

Throughout the year, our Public Education Team staffs an educational display booth at several local community showcase events, where we dispense information to interested citizens, listen to any concerns or answer any questions that they may have.

Scott County Environmental Health is also proud to be a participant in the award winning Outdoor Education Program. Each year during the month of September, area sixth grade students from both public and private elementary schools participate in a one-half day long field event held in a wooded area on a local farm. The site is a mature forested area surrounded by wetlands, prairie and cropland. It provides an opportunity for the students to learn about various environmental topics as they make their way through seven small clearings in the woods, and participate in an interactive presentation at each station. The seven organizations that provide the presentations are Scott County Environmental Health, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR)-Wildlife, DNR-Waters Division, DNR-Forestry, DNR-Parks and Recreation, NRCS Soil Conservation Service, and Scott County Extension Service. The Environmental Health presentation deals with the proper management of household hazardous waste.
