How to Produce less
Household Hazardous Waste
The best way to “manage” your Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) is to not create it in the first place! Simply put, this means selecting the least toxic item that will "do the job" when shopping - and then buying only the amount you need for that particular job. Buying in larger quantities is not a bargain if you create left-over’s that will require expensive management or disposal.
Once your project is done, be sure to store any remaining products according to the instructions on the label (protect it from freezing, etc), so that it will remain in usable condition for your next project. You might also consider giving the leftovers to other people you know who could use it. Finally, if you are unable to use it up or give it away, bring it to the Scott County HHW Facility for drop-off, and tell the attendant that the product is still in good condition. It may then be placed in our RE-USE Room where other people can take it home and use it for FREE!
Remember to look for safer or less hazardous products whenever shopping - those often cost less than the more hazardous products, work just as well, and are safer for your family and the environment. Choose water based products when they are available (i.e. latex, water-based paint stripper) - look for the phrases "clean-up with water" or "protect from freezing" on the label. If those alternatives are not available, choose products with labels that say "caution" or "warning" rather than those that say "danger" or "poison".
Watch for the words on product labels. They will tell you the level of hazard that exists with a certain product:
|
Caution! |
Warning! |
Danger! |
Poison! |
|
Mildly Hazardous |
Moderately Hazardous |
Extremely Flammable, Corrosive or Toxic! |
Highly Toxic! |
Always remember to choose the least hazardous product that will get the job done….and then buy only the amount that you need!
