What is HHW?

                

What is Household Hazardous Waste? HHW can be any item from your home that is flammable, corrosive, toxic, poisonous, or reactive. Here are some examples of HHW that will be accepted at the Scott County HHW Facility:

 

• Paint Products: paint, stain, varnish, polyurethane, paint stripper
• Wood Preservatives or Bleaches
• Household Chemicals: oven cleaner, household or toilet bowl or drain cleaners, furniture polish, moth balls, unused or outdated medicines
• Yard Chemicals: non-ag pesticides, poisons, weed killers, pool chemicals
• Automotive Chemicals - gas, oil, antifreeze (these must be in a container that is 2-1/2 gallons or smaller in size), brake or power steering fluid, etc
• Adhesives and Putties
• Aerosol Spray Products: spray paint, oven cleaner, pesticides
• Fuels and Solvents: fingernail polish remover, charcoal lighter fluid, kerosene

• Mercury: fluorescent tubes, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), thermometers, thermostats
 Bicycles: We are now able to accept small numbers of bicycles at no charge.  These bikes will be refurbished and given to needy families.
• Appliances: items such as washers, dryers, refrigerators, stoves, dehumidifiers, window air conditioners, etc, are accepted for a small fee
• Electronics: TVs and stereo or computer components, etc, are accepted for a small fee
Tires: Tires from cars and light trucks, semi trucks, and farm tractors are accepted for a small fee

Newly available this year: some business wastes can also be accepted through our new VSQG program, for a low fee and with advance notification. Call us for more information at 952-496-8652 or 952-496-8477.

The Scott County HHW Facility will NOT accept the following items or materials:

  • Asbestos
  • Business waste (call us at 952-496-8477 first for an appointment)
  • Explosives
  • Farm pesticides (call us at 952-496-8652 for information about the next free Farm Pesticide collection event)
  • Medical wastes – needles (sharps), etc
  • Controlled substances
  • Unidentified waste
  • Radioactive waste
