The Licensing Process

If you think you may be a hazardous waste generator, and thus may need to be licensed, simply give us a call. We can help you make that determination. We’ll start out by asking you some basic questions such as name of business, location, what your business does, and what types of waste you generate. We will then set up an appointment and come out to your business to visit with you.

The first thing we do is a site walk through or site inspection. This gives us an understanding of your business, how your business operates, and often times may identify wastes you didn’t know you were generating. The inspector will bring along the forms needed to apply for your hazardous waste license and fill them out with you during the inspection. The two main forms will be the application form for your hazardous waste generator license and an application form for your hazardous waste generator EPA ID number. We will also talk with you about the requirements of the Scott County Hazardous Waste Ordinance and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency regulations, and answer any questions that you may have. We will provide you with a wealth of information to help you comply with rules and regulations, as well as providing other valuable resources.

The hazardous waste license is good for one year and must be renewed annually. The fee for the hazardous waste generator license is based on the amount of waste you generate. Therefore, the larger the volume of waste you generate the higher your fee will be. This also creates an incentive to minimize the amount of waste you generate.

HINT: To help the application process and the inspection go faster and smoother, please have available the names, EPA #’s, and addresses of the businesses you are planning on using for waste disposal. Also have available the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for the products that you use, the results from any testing that you have had done, and receipts for any wastes that have already been disposed of.
