2010 Disabled Veterans’ Deer Hunt

Sheriff’s Office and Veterans’ Services Hosts Special Disabled Veterans’ Deer Hunt for 2010.

After active duty, returning to civilian life isn’t easy. Returning to normalcy after being physically disabled while in the service isn’t just “not easy.” It’s an uphill battle. In an effort to allow veterans to reclaim a bit of normalcy to their lives, the Scott County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with Scott County Veterans Services, will host a Disabled Veterans’ Deer Hunt.

Similar hunts have shown an increase in the confidence and self esteem of physically challenged veterans. For many of them, the hunt gives them an opportunity to participate in something they haven’t done since their pre-service years. More than just about the deer, it gives our disabled veterans a chance at a better outlook on life, a chance to share their experiences, and get back to nature.

In 2008, we had overwhelming support by numerous landowners in the townships. Without their cooperation, we couldn’t have hosted this event. In addition, we also received generous donations from the New Market, Elko, and Webster Lion’s Clubs and the Shakopee Chapter of the MN Deer Hunter’s Association.

Hunters have to be physically disabled by military service to participate. All hunters will be assisted by guides and assistants from our Sheriff’s Office.

We’re looking forward to hosting our 2010 hunt. If you care to make a financial contribution to this special event, please contact Chief Deputy Dean Opatz of the Scott County Sheriff’s Office at 952-496-8719 or email at dopatz@co.scott.mn.us. Donations will be used toward food, hunting supplies and venison processing for the 2009 Disabled Veterans Deer Hunt.
