Be Informed
To be informed means that you should be aware of the different types of disasters that could happen in the area of your home, workplace, schools, or where you recreate. This awareness will then help you think about and prepare for those potential emergencies in advance. It’s a typical approach to preparation – you look at the incidents that may impact you and prepare accordingly.
What are some of the hazards we face here in Scott County? They are, for the most part, the same hazards that exist in other areas of the state. We could be subject to transportation accidents involving all modes of travel such as trains, planes and automobiles. We are all aware since 9/11 and some of the subsequent bombing in Europe that transportation safety has changed.
Hazardous chemicals are also a concern. According to the CodeReady website, there are approximately 2,000 chemical incidents occurring each year in Minnesota. Incidents include small gasoline spills, big pipeline breaks, storage tanker and train accidents and toxic air releases. However, household chemicals also pose a problem if used incorrectly. Be aware of the manufacturer’s requirements in order to use and store these products properly.
A disease outbreak or other public health concerns affecting a large part of the population is another hazard of which to be aware. Scott County Public Health has worked on plans to deal with a potential pandemic flu outbreak, but are also working on and distributing information about various other health issues such as the West Nile virus and food borne pathogens like E. coli. Knowing the proper preventative measures and when to use them can go a long way towards protecting your family and yourself.
Other hazards to think about: Utilities breakdown can happen due to bad weather or equipment failure, fires can occur due to any number of causes, and flooding is not only limited to spring time. Flash floods can be very dangerous and you should be especially vigilant during times of heavy rainfall.
If you are aware of these emergencies and think them through in advance, your preparedness plans will be that much stronger. Emergency kits, weather radios, extra blankets, extra batteries and flashlights are examples of things you can use to get ready and be informed.
The website below can be used to look at the above mentioned hazards and has additional links to many checklists you can use to be informed and get prepared for disaster.
