Role and Responsibility of the Sheriff

The Sheriff is the chief law enforcement officer in the county and is the only elected law enforcement official. The Sheriff Office's primary concern and most important function is the safety and well-being of all persons and property in Scott County.

The Scott County Sheriff’s Office is accountable for providing law enforcement services to the 11 townships of: Belle Plaine, Blakeley, Cedar Lake, Credit River, Helena, Jackson, Louisville, New Market, Sand Creek and Spring Lake. Although the cities of Belle Plaine, Jordan, New Prague, Prior Lake, Savage and Shakopee have full-time police departments, the Sheriff’s Office assists them as needed. We also serve the citizens of Elko New Market.

Included responsibilities of the Sheriff per Minnesota State Statue Chapter 387:
• Executing court-issued civil and criminal process,
• Providing patrol and investigative functions,
• Providing patrol of the lakes and waterways,
• Searching for lost persons,
• Providing a secure, healthy detention facility,
• Maintaining an accurate record-keeping system, and
• Providing a 9-1-1 Emergency Communications Center.
