DEATH CERTIFICATES
Death records are on file for persons who died in Scott County or lived in Scott County at the time of death. We have records from 1871 to the present.
To obtain a death record in Minnesota, you must complete a Minnesota Death Certificate Application and prove tangible interest. You must have proof of identity in person or have your signature notarized if applying by mail.
To download the most current applications for Birth and Death Certificates, you can click here for a link to the Minnesota Department of Health.
To prove tangible interest, you must be:
• the spouse, child, parent, grandchild, grandparent or sibling of the subject
• the legal custodian, guardian of the subject, personal representative of the estate of the subject (must present legal documentation)
• the person who filed (or representative of an organization that filed) the death information with MDH or a local registrar.
The fee for a Certified Death Certificate is $13.00 for the first copy and $6.00 for each additional certified copy of the same record if ordered at the same time. You must pay by CASH or CHECK – we do not accept debit or credit cards. Orders are not accepted through the Internet.
